Fall 2026 Study
Forging a Sacred Weapon by Kathy Baldock
Beginning in September, St. Paul’s Campus Ministry will begin an eight-week book study and discussion group centered around Kathy Baldock’s groundbreaking book Forging a Sacred Weapon: The 1946 Bible Mistranslation Behind Anti-Gay Theology.
In 1946, the word “homosexuals” appeared in an English Bible translation for the very first time. Kathy Baldock’s extensive historical research traces how that single translation decision reshaped theology, impacted families, and influenced decades of church teaching and culture wars that continue today.
Together, we will explore:
- the historical background behind the mistranslation
- how translation decisions can shape theology and culture
- the impact these interpretations have had on LGBTQ individuals and families
- what faith, Scripture, truth, and grace call us toward today
This study is designed for:
- LGBTQ individuals
- parents and family members
- allies
- students
- anyone wanting a deeper historical understanding of these conversations
This is not a debate group. It is a space for thoughtful discussion, listening, learning, and respectful conversation. Different perspectives are welcome, and participants are encouraged to engage with honesty, curiosity, and grace.
Each week will include chapter reviews, guided discussion, and open conversation in a relaxed and welcoming environment.

This book is a 40 day devotional with a short chapter for each day. It reminds us that we are loved by our creator and challenges us to believe it for ourselves.
The book reads like a conversation with relatable stories and challenging questions that make you look within. The citations from theologians and explanations of the original languages of bible verses are understandable and relevant, and never feel like they’re being shoved down your throat in an attempt to prove a point.
There’s a lot of Christian devotionals out there that will make you reflect on how terrible of a person you are. But this one will make you reflect on how loved you are and what you can do to join our creator in loving those around you even more.
